SimGroup contributes to conjoined twin separation procedure.

The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a case report on the separation of 22 month old conjoined twin girls. The MGH Simulation Group (now MGH Medical Device and Simulation Laboratory) worked with the MGH 3D Lab to create a life size 3D printed model of portions of the the twins' skeletal structure and vasculature, which was helpful in surgical planning and as a reference in the operating room.

Lab Director Mark P. Ottensmeyer and Gregory J. Loan (now at Boston Children's Hospital SIMPeds program) worked with three STL models provided by the MGH 3D Lab to create a life-sized unified model that was fabricated in a 30-hour print on our high resolution 3D printer, followed by a day and a half of model cleaning with fine tools to prevent damage while manually removing model support material.
